Case Study: Two-Storey Side Extension for a Growing Family Transforming Space Through Thoughtful Architectural Design
This project began when a client approached me looking to future-proof their home with a two-storey side extension to better suit their growing family.
The brief was clear, create more usable living space, improve flow, and enhance day-to-day functionality, all while maximising the potential of the existing property.
Through careful architectural design, detailed drawings, and ongoing project management, we were able to completely transform both the layout and feel of the home.
The Brief
Ground Floor
Retain and enlarge the existing kitchen/ dining space to create an open-plan kitchen, dining and living area
Add a utility room, WC, and boot room
Improve and enlarge the entrance hallway
First Floor
Create a guest bedroom with an ensuite
Improve the usability of the existing bathroom

Design Process & Key Considerations
Improving the Layout
One of the main challenges was the existing staircase layout, which restricted access into the proposed extension and resulted in a cramped entrance, far from ideal for a busy family with pushchairs and day-to-day activity.
As part of the architectural design process, I proposed reconfiguring the final section of the staircase from a turned layout into a more traditional straight run.
This simple but effective change:
- Opened up the hallway significantly
- Improved circulation through the home
- Allowed space for a functional boot room entrance
Exploring Layout Options
A key part of my architectural services is working closely with clients to explore multiple design options. For this project, I produced several iterations of architectural drawings, allowing the client to visualise and compare layouts before moving forward.
One of the most impactful decisions was to relocate the kitchen into what was previously the dining room. This achieved several benefits:
- Positioned the kitchen in a naturally darker area, ideal for task lighting
- Freed up brighter spaces for living and dining, where the family spend most of their time
- Improved overall flow and usability of the ground floor
We also introduced bifold doors to the side elevation, making the most of the south-facing aspect and bringing in plenty of natural light. A rear extension was considered, but ultimately ruled out due to the limited garden space.
Practical Design Details
The WC was accessed via the utility room, avoiding disruption to the main living space
A boot room was introduced to create a practical transition space into the home
Steelwork was carefully designed to extend the first-floor bathroom by an additional metre, a small change that made a big difference, allowing space for both a bath and a separate shower.
Planning & Collaboration
During the planning process, we initially proposed a bay window to mirror the existing elevation and enhance the property’s appearance. However, this element was not supported by the planners.
As part of my architectural project management role, I worked closely with the planning authority and adapted the design mid-application, removing the bay window to ensure the scheme could be approved.
This highlights the value of working with an experienced architectural designer who can negotiate with planners and adapt designs to achieve a successful outcome.
The Result
The finished extension has completely transformed the property, both in appearance and functionality.
What was once a dated and awkward layout is now a modern, spacious family home, centred around a beautiful open-plan kitchen, dining and living area. The improved layout, enhanced natural light, and thoughtful design details have created a home that works perfectly for everyday family life.
